Sarnath in a day: the stupa, the museum, and the Friday rule

Why Sarnath

After his enlightenment at Bodh Gaya, the Buddha came to the deer park at Sarnath and preached his first sermon to five companions - the moment Buddhists call the turning of the wheel of the Dharma. The site grew into a great monastic centre, and what survives today is an ASI-protected field of ruins, the Dhamek Stupa standing over it, and a museum holding what was dug out of the ground.

For guests at Hotel Vagmi, Sarnath is the easy one. It is about 5 km by road, and it runs on a gentler clock than the old city: flat paths, space to sit, and very little jostling.

What to see, in order

Dhamek Stupa and the ruins

The massive stupa and the excavated monastery foundations around it, in an ASI-ticketed enclosure. Open sunrise to sunset.

Sarnath Archaeological Museum

Home of the original Lion Capital of Ashoka - India's national emblem - and the seated Buddha preaching the first sermon. Closed on Fridays.

Mulagandha Kuti Vihara

A Buddhist temple opened in 1931 by the Maha Bodhi Society, its walls painted with the life of the Buddha by the Japanese artist Kosetsu Nosu. Morning and afternoon sessions with a break at midday.

Chaukhandi Stupa

Just outside the main complex, marking where the Buddha is said to have met his first five disciples. The octagonal tower on top was added in 1588, in Akbar's reign, for Humayun's visit.

Timings and tickets

• The ruins and Dhamek Stupa are open from sunrise to sunset.
• The ASI ticket is ₹25 for Indian visitors at the gate, ₹20 if bought online on the ASI portal, and ₹300 for foreign visitors. A QR code at the entry lets you buy it on your phone and skip the counter queue.
• Carry an original photo ID - it is checked at entry. E-tickets cannot be transferred, cancelled or refunded.
• The museum shuts every Friday. Sources give its hours as either 9 AM or 10 AM to 5 PM; plan on 10 to be safe.
• There is an evening light-and-sound show at the Dhamek Stupa, roughly 6:30 to 7 PM, with tickets around ₹200 for Indian visitors. Check at the gate on the day - shows and prices change.

Do not plan Sarnath for a Friday. The ruins are open, but the museum - the Lion Capital included - is closed, and it is the half of Sarnath most people remember.

A half-day that works

Leave the hotel at about 9:30 AM. Start with the Chaukhandi Stupa on the way in, then the ruins and Dhamek Stupa while the morning is still cool, and the museum once it opens. Finish at Mulagandha Kuti Vihara before its midday break, and you are back in Shivpur for lunch at Flavours. That leaves the evening free for the Ganga Aarti at Dashashwamedh.

The travel desk arranges a cab that waits while you walk round. If you prefer the late light, reverse it: museum in the afternoon, ruins at golden hour, and the light-and-sound show before you drive back.
