Varanasi with your parents: an easier pace, and what to plan around

Choose the season first

Summer in Varanasi is hard on older travellers - daytime temperatures regularly pass 37°C in May and June - and the monsoon, July and August especially, brings heavy rain. The kindest months are mid-November to mid-February. December days run to about 23°C with nights near 11°C, so pack a warm layer for dawn on the river.

Kashi Vishwanath without the ordeal

The general darshan queue can be long and slow. The temple trust's Sugam Darshan is the gentler route: its official site describes it as queue-less darshan escorted by a Shastri, with a free locker included - one less thing to manage when phones and bags cannot go in.

• Visitor guides report wheelchairs near the corridor gates and separate queues for senior citizens and divyang visitors. Confirm the current arrangement with the trust's helpline, +91 6393 131 608, before you go.
• Go early on a weekday. Mondays, the month of Shravan and Mahashivratri are the most crowded.
• Cars stop at the nearest road point to the old city; there is some walking. Ask the travel desk to have the cab wait close by.

The aarti from a boat

The ghats are long flights of stone steps, and the evening aarti at Dashashwamedh draws a shoulder-to-shoulder crowd. Watching from a boat moored in front of the ghat means a seat, space, and the whole ceremony in view. Choose a boat that boards with the fewest steps, ask for life jackets, and agree the fare before stepping in. The travel desk will book it if you ask the night before.

Sarnath: the easy day

Sarnath, about 5 km from the hotel, is flat, green and unhurried - lawns, paths, and benches in the shade. It is the best sight in Varanasi for a parent who tires easily. Remember the museum is closed on Fridays.

A quiet base

The old city is beautiful and relentless. Shivpur is residential and quiet, about 6 km from the ghats and 2 km from Varanasi Junction, so the trip can be one outing in the morning, rest in the afternoon, and one in the evening. Tell the front desk when you book if anyone in your party needs a lower floor, extra help with luggage, or a ground-level pickup point - it is easier to arrange before you arrive.
